The federal government is using data from push notifications to track contacts

The WaPo’s article’s subtitle: “Apple and Google had been told to keep the practice secret until Sen. Ron Wyden revealed it in a letter Wednesday”

Federal government is using data from push notifications to track contacts

A lot of the details in the article are cause for concern. But let me highlight just a few of them:

° There’s a potential erosion to personal and communication privacy if government investigators can access device token data merely by demand.
° The Justice Department’s lack of transparency, sets up an easy to imagine risk that innocent citizens’ data maybe extracted in dragnets.
° The Justice Department has gagged Apple and Google, prohibiting the companies from telling the users their data was handed over.

Senator Wyden consistently fights hard for us. He’s dedicated to protecting our digital rights through legislation and policies promoting transparency, consumer protection, and defenses against misuse of our personal information. The senator is doing God’s work.
